Guide to Toners

Why toners are beneficial to every skin care routine

Toners have many names and can benefit you in many different ways. Mists, fresheners, essences, tonics (toniques), astringents and even lotions are all different names for toners. They all have the same essential benefits but depending on their ingredients can be customized to your skin type and routine.

  • Toners remove any residue left behind by cleansers and can remove excess oil, dirt and makeup.
  • They restore your skins natural pH (5.5) which will help your following products be absorbed better. Water has a neutral pH of 7, so think of it like a purified, nutrient rich water for your face. It gets your skins pH back to its 5.5.
  • Did I mention it helps your other skin care product work better? It acts as a funnel for your following products to penetrate deeper and give your skin the nutrients it is offering.
  • They can help hydrate, tighten and tone, kill bacteria, and can help certain skin conditions depending on ingredients.

One definition of "Tone" is "to give greater strength or firmness to (the body or a part of it)." This definition applies to exercise but is a great way to define exactly what a toner does. It gives greater strength, firmness, and quality to the skin and you should be excising the use of a toner in your routine!!

Now, I know what you are thinking, "Really? Another step to add to my skin care routine?" I thought the same thing in beauty school. I thought surely this magical toner stuff isn't going to impact my skin that much. Well, guess what. I proved myself wrong. I started using one and it took awhile to notice the difference but it truly did make one. I especially noticed it when I stopped using one for a while. My skin felt less hydrated and lacked luster and shine.

It is also very important to find the right one for your skin. There are many to choose from but here are a few Eminence favorites. There is one for everyone.

All types, including Sensitive Skin

Stone Crop Hydrating Mist is one of my personal favorites. Its hydrating and helps even out the skin tone. Stone Crop is a very soothing and healing plant . Set your makeup with this or use over your Sun Defense minerals to smooth and hydrate.

Soothing Chamomile Tonique uses lavender and chamomile together to revitalize, soothe, and comfort the skin. This is also used to neutralize enzymes and peels. This is a great one for sensitive or easily irritated skin.

 Normal to Combination Skin

The Red Currant Mattifying Mist - A soothing, refreshing mist to balance out your skin. Red Currant is a great source of Vitamin C to fight signs of aging. This is a great one for fighting breakouts as well.

 Dry Skin

The Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating mist is your collagen boosting, firming, and smoothing mist. Great for dryer and mature skin types. Neroli Oil and Coconut milk both moisturize and soften the skin.

Oily Skin

The Lime Refresh Tonique is amazing for the summer time. Its high in Vitamin C to tone and balance the skin. Lime juice is an antioxidant and helps minimize the look of pores.

Toning is a simple step that is very beneficial to the skin . Lots of them can be used to set makeup or refresh your skin throughout the day. It a great pick me up while traveling.

Which Tonique is best for you? If you still have questions, message me anytime!

I hope you have a sweet day!
